The record for the largest dollar-valued art auction in Canadian history took place May 23, 2007 in Vancouver. $23 million worth of Canadian art was sold by Heffel Fine Art Auction House, which is just shy of doubling the value of the previous record sale of $12.5 million, also set by Heffel’s on November 25, 2005.
The top sale of the night was Pine Tree and Red House, Winter, City Painting 11 by Lawren Harris which sold for $2.875-million, including premium. The final price more than doubled its presale high-end estimate and set a record for a Harris oil on canvas sold at auction. It is the second most valuable Canadian painting to ever sell at auction, after Paul Kane’s Scene from the Northwest – Portrait, which sold for $5,063-million in 2002.
